Good morning !
This weekend is the unofficial beginning of summer! Pools are opening, the end of the school year is near, and plans are being made for vacations, cookouts, and other summer activities.
I find it can be easier to stick to healthy habits during the summer months. Fresh produce is more readily available, grilling is a healthier method for preparing lean meats and veggies, and it's easy to stay active when the outdoors are calling!
If you've looking for an ideal time to cultivate healthy habits summer may be your season!
Here are some habits that you can easily add to your lifestyle that will help you achieve optimal results.
- Drink more water: As the temperature's rise it's important to make hydration a priority. If you don't already have one, get yourself a high quality insulated water bottle and keep it with you at all times. Proper hydration helps with sustaining energy, proper organ function, focus, combating cravings, and can help reduce the portion size you eat at meals.
- Go play! The weather is gorgeous! Get outside and find fun activities that get you moving. Hiking, swimming, biking, walking, dodge-ball, Frisbee, volleyball, kayaking, SUP, outdoor group fitness classes, there is something for everyone! Find activities that you enjoy, ditch your couch and Netflix, and go have some fit fun!
- Eat your veggies: Farmers markets, roadside produce stands, and your local grocery stores are going to be stocked with fresh fruits and vegetables. Find new recipes that showcase fresh produce and experiment with new flavors and foods! Fill up on veggies first to help control your caloric intake and ensure you're getting plenty of high fiber, nutrient dense foods in your diet.
- Everything in moderation: Incorporating healthy habits does no mean you have to skip out on all of the fun summer treats. Focus on portion size or practice sampling a few bites instead of eating the whole serving size. Choosing the small or even kids size allows you to enjoy your favorite flavors without overindulging. Also be mindful of what you're drinking. Frozen drinks, specialty coffees, juices and smoothies, and alcoholic
beverages can be extremely high in calories. Read your labels and make educated choices. Allow yourself to enjoy the food you love, but use discretion and practice restraint as you learn to incorporate a moderate approach to your diet.
I wish you all a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day weekend. Take a moment to remember and honor the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
